Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman was born on September 1, 1996, in Oakland, California. Her name derives from the Shona language Tendai, meaning “to give thanks”. She first fell in love with acting as a child when her mom worked during the summers as the house manager of the California Shakespeare Theater in Orinda, California. When she was eight years old, she joined a hip-hop dance troupe called Future Shock Oakland, and she also danced the hula for two years with the Academy of Hawaiian Arts. She was cast in roles at several local theaters, including Little Ti Moune in Berkeley Playhouse’s Once on This Island and Joe in TheaterWorks’ Caroline, or Change. She played Lady Anne in Shakespeare’s Richard III and Celia in his As You Like It.

Zendaya and her family moved to Los Angeles around 2009, when she was about 13 years old. Some of her first professional gigs were as a model in ads for Old Navy and Macy’s. Her first film role was in the Disney Channel Original Movie Frenemies, for which she recorded four songs – “Something to Dance For,” “Fashion Is My Kryptonite,” “Same Heart,” and “Made in Japan”. She signed with Hollywood Records in 2012 and released her self-titled debut album one year later. In October 2012, she competed in Season 16 of Dancing with the Stars, the youngest contestant ever to participate in the show at that time. She and her partner Valentine Chmerkovskiy finished in second place. In 2015, she starred as K.C. Cooper in the Disney Channel series K.C. Undercover.

In 2017, She made her feature film debut as Michelle Jones-Watson, or “MJ,” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. In 2019, the hit HBO series Euphoria premiered, starring Zendaya as Rue, a 17-year-old drug addict. For her role on the show, Zendaya won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, making her the youngest-ever winner of the award. She has also performed and written several songs for the series soundtrack, including “All for Us” by Labrinth. Zendaya has reprised the role of MJ in Spider-Man: Far from Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

She has managed to keep her romantic life somewhat private. Fans suspect that she dated musician and actor Trevor Jackson after starring in his music video for his single “Like We Grown” in 2013. The two have said they are only friends, but in 2017, Zendaya did state that she had been in a secret relationship for several years.

She was rumored to be in a relationship with American football star Odell Beckham, Jr., in 2016, but again, She denied the claims, saying they were just friends. The two had been seen together at a Grammys after-party and a New York Knicks basketball game.

After being seen on vacation twice with her Euphoria co-star Jacob Elordi in 2019, fans speculated that the two were together. They were also seen and photographed kissing while in New York City in 2020. Neither ever confirmed the relationship, but they seem to remain friends and continue to star in Euphoria together.

Finally, Zendaya has confirmed being in a relationship with none other than Spider-man himself, British actor Tom Holland. The two confirmed their relationship during the summer of 2021, but it is not known when they officially started dating, even though fans have speculated about a romance between the two since they met in 2016.

Zendaya’s parents are both teachers. Her mother, Claire Stoermer, is of German and Scottish ancestry. Zendaya attended Fruitvale Elementary School, where her mother taught for 20 years. Currently, her mom has her jewelry line, Kizzmet Jewelry. Her father, Azembe Ajamu Coleman, is African-American with a family in Arkansas. He also acts as Zendaya’s manager.
