The Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting bigger and bigger every year, with new characters, series, movies, and even holiday specials. Marvel Studios has gone above and beyond casting some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. One included Zoe Saldana, who played the role of Gamora, one of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
A lot has happened in Phases 3 & 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but one character whose fate was either left hanging or often questioned was Gamora. However, with Gamora returning for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, fans have more questions than ever, and we’re here to help you figure those out, or at least we hope we do!
Avengers: Endgame left us with many questions, especially regarding some deaths. For example, Steve Rogers was an older man by the movie’s end, but his death still hasn’t been officially confirmed.
There are rumors that he is now living on the moon. However, Gamora’s story was a little different, and her direct affiliation with Thanos didn’t help her fate either.
Several important characters die in Avengers: Endgame, including Tony and Natasha, both of whom have been fan favorites, and technically, Gamora died too. But that technicality has everyone questioning her whereabouts and which Gamora will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
Here’s everything you need to know about Gamora and how she is still alive, despite that soul-crushing scene in Avengers Endgame:
It’s time to face the music.

Before we dive into any theories or how or why Gamora is still alive, we first need to address this question. Did she really die in Avengers: Infinity War? We’ll start by telling you that the concept of time travel in movies has been used time and again, and every movie handles it differently, and so do Scott Lang, Bruce Banner, and Marvel as a whole. This concept of time travels heavily impacted what happened to Gamora.
Thanos realized he needed the soul stone, and in exchange, he had to sacrifice someone he loved. In all his existence, we find out that he truly loved his adoptive daughter, Gamora, and so he takes her all the way to Vormir, throwing her off the cliff in a very emotional scene that brings tears to all our eyes.
We see Gamora lying lifeless, so we can confirm that Gamora did die in Avengers: Infinity War; however, it is important to note that she died before the Thanos snap. The snap took place after Thanos had all the stones, which meant he had acquired the soul stone, hence confirming Gamora’s death in Vormir.
Now, this is when things start getting a little more confusing. Natasha sacrificed herself for the soul stone when the Avengers went back in time to retrieve the stones. However, towards the end of Avengers: Endgame, Gamora returns, and Natasha doesn’t, which had people confused because they thought that was the last they had seen of Gamora.
Here’s the catch, the Gamora that returns in 2023, when the events of Avenger: Endgame takes place, is not the same Gamora whom Thanos killed in Vormir. The Gamora that returns in Avengers: Endgame, and the one we will see in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, is Gamora from 2014 before she knew any of these people, which is why she is completely thrown off when Peter Quill tried to make a romantic gesture, assuming it’s his girlfriend come back to life.
The time heist wasn’t perfect, it had some glitches here and there, and we don’t blame Scott Lang or the Avengers for it.
However, it allowed 2014 Gamora to enter the current MCU timeline. Once again, it is important to note; it is not the same Gamora. She’s younger, she knows more about Thanos than the Guardians, and it isn’t the same.
Fans often wonder why a version of Gamora returned but not Natasha Romanoff, as they both died the same way. The difference is, Gamora died in Vormir before the Thanos snap, aka the blip, and Natasha died after the Thanos snap.
That’s the most common explanation for these events. The rules of the stone strictly forbid bringing anyone back from the dead, and once again, the Gamora you will witness in phase 5 is from a different timeline and a variant of the Gamora you knew.
Fans were disappointed when Gamora did not appear in Thor: Love and Thunder or the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, but her absence was understandable. As mentioned before, the Gamora in the current MCU timeline isn’t from this timeline, and she is unaware of her surroundings and isn’t well versed with the Guardians at all, even Nebula for that before, so her going on rock n roll adventures with them, or spend Christmas with them didn’t make a lot of sense.
We’re hoping that this Gamora is a little more well-adjusted in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, and a lot of that movie will revolve around Gamora and her fitting back in with the gang, which leads us to the next part of this article.
Yes! Fans have been delighted ever since Marvel Studios confirmed the return of Gamora in the upcoming movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Zoe Saldana will be returning as Gamora, straight out of Avengers: Endgame.
There are very few original characters from the earlier phases which are still alive, and fans wish to hold on to them as tight as possible, and Gamora is one of them.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is set to be an emotional rollercoaster, so we are sure some of it will include Gamora getting to know Guardians, and especially Peter Quill all over again.
This is her family. This is where she belongs. Quill is the love of her life. However, will Gamora realize all of this in the upcoming movie? It’s only a matter of time before we find out!
Gamora is one of the most badass women that Marvel has seen, be it in the movies or the comics, and her absence has been felt in the last few years.
Nevertheless, she’s back, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for her. You can see her in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 trailer.
