Aubrey Christina Plaza was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on June 26, 1984. She was raised Catholic and attended an all-girls Catholic school, Ursuline Academy, from which she graduated in 2002. While in high school, she served as student council president, and she also performed in local theatre productions with the Wilmington Drama League.
After graduating from high school, Plaza went on to study film at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. While studying at NYU, she suffered a stroke at only 20 years old. The stroke caused her to experience temporary paralysis and expressive aphasia, which left her unable to speak or write. Thankfully, because she was so young, she made a full recovery. During her time at university, Plaza served as an intern at NBC, which afforded her the opportunity to work on Saturday Night Live. In 2004, she began performing at the Upright Citizens Brigade, a well-known theatre where she trained in improv and sketch comedy. Plaza also had the chance to perform stand-up comedy at the Laugh Factory and The Improv in New York City. She graduated from New York University in 2006.
After earning her degree, Plaza auditioned for and won small roles in several online series. Her first major role came when she was cast as comedian Seth Rogen’s love interest in the film Funny People in 2009. She then appeared in the romantic action-comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. the World alongside then-boyfriend Michael Cera and the very famous Captain America Chris Evans.
From 2009 through 2015, Plaza played April Ludgate on the political mockumentary series Parks and Recreation, the role for which she is best known, and was also Chris Pratt’s love interest on the same show. Plaza began dating her Scott Pilgrim vs the World co-star Michael Cera in 2009 after hitting it off while filming the movie. They managed to keep the relationship under wraps at the time, and many fans never even heard that they had been together until years later. She even told RuPaul that they almost got married in Las Vegas while on a road trip after they had finished filming. They ended their relationship after about a year and a half, but the two remain close friends to this day.
Plaza has been in a relationship with American screenwriter and film director Jeff Baena since 2011. She has starred in several of his films, including Life After Beth, The Little Hours, and Joshy.
