Aubrey Christina Plaza was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on June 26, 1984. She was raised Catholic and attended an all-girls Catholic school, Ursuline Academy, from which she graduated in 2002. While in high school, she served as student council president, and she also performed in local theatre productions with the Wilmington Drama League.

After graduating from high school, Plaza went on to study film at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. While studying at NYU, she suffered a stroke at only 20 years old. The stroke caused her to experience temporary paralysis and expressive aphasia, which left her unable to speak or write. Thankfully, because she was so young, she made a full recovery. During her time at university, Plaza served as an intern at NBC, which afforded her the opportunity to work on Saturday Night Live. In 2004, she began performing at the Upright Citizens Brigade, a well-known theatre where she trained in improv and sketch comedy. Plaza also had the chance to perform stand-up comedy at the Laugh Factory and The Improv in New York City. She graduated from New York University in 2006.

After earning her degree, Plaza auditioned for and won small roles in several online series. Her first major role came when she was cast as comedian Seth Rogen’s love interest in the film Funny People in 2009. She then appeared in the romantic action-comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. the World alongside then-boyfriend Michael Cera and the very famous Captain America Chris Evans.

She has since starred in several comedy films, such as Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates and Dirty Grandpa. Bernadette is the former Deputy Attorney General for the state of Delaware, and she currently practices law at a private firm. 

Plaza has two younger sisters, Renée and Natalie. Natalie works as a financial consultant, like their father, and Renée is a student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Plaza is of Irish, German, and English descent on her mother’s side. On her father’s side, she is Puerto Rican, her grandfather Ismael having been born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Through her father’s side, she has Taíno, or indigenous Caribbean, ancestry, as well.
